The Peeps

Their journey began as tiny little embryos that we started calling “the peeps”. 13 of my eggs were harvested on April 21, 2014. Out of the 13 eggs that were retrieved and the 6 that were fertilized, only these 2 little ones continued to grow for 5 days until they became blastocysts. The entire time we prayed that the Lord would keep at least two of the embryos, and He answered our prayers. At this point in the peeps’ journey we had to push pause, because my progesterone levels were not where they needed to be in order to do the transfer on day 5. So the tiny peeps became “peep-sicles” for about 3 weeks.

Transfer day: May 19th, 2014

The day before the transfer the “peep-sicles” came out of the freezer to be thawed. (This sounds so strange, but it is actually quite amazing that science makes this whole process possible.) On May 19th, 2014 (which also happened to be my husband’s birthday) the peeps were transferred via a catheter into their new home. We watched in amazement for a little flash of light to show up on the ultrasound. The doctor told us that this flash of light was the tiny air bubble that went in after the embryos so we could see where the embryos were deposited (because the embryos were too small to see.) I still can’t believe that we were able to see the exact spot and know the exact time that our babies entered the womb. It is pretty incredible!

Waiting for positive results

After the transfer the peeps and I had a very restful 5 days of bed rest. We slept a lot, watched Netflix and enjoyed meals provided by some of the families from our Bible study group. After one week of waiting I couldn’t wait any longer to find out if the peeps had actually implanted. The doctors recommend waiting 2 weeks before doing a blood test, but I caved after one week and took a home pregnancy test. And the test showed a plus sign! This meant that the peeps were nice and comfy in their new home where they would stay for the next 9 months.
